Inspect the dataset before reading values
An HDF5 file can contain groups, datasets, attributes, links and named datatypes. Opening the hierarchy is not the same as understanding the meaning of every array. Select a real dataset and inspect its shape, datatype, filters and attributes. Units or axis descriptions may be attributes, but they can also be documented elsewhere by the producing application.
The workbench does not infer MAT or NetCDF semantics from an HDF5 container. It also does not follow external or soft links. If a listed object is metadata-only, read the stated reason before proceeding. A virtual dataset may describe data in another file, so returning its fill values would not be an honest substitute for retrieving the actual source.
Write one range per axis
Use a colon for a complete axis, a nonnegative integer for one position, or start:stop:step for a regular selection. The stop bound is exclusive. For a three-dimensional cube, 1, :, 0:5:2 selects the second layer, all rows and columns zero, two and four. The preview CSV includes original axis coordinates rather than presenting an unexplained flattened list.
A single-index selection retains a length-one axis in NPY. This makes the output shape explicit and avoids silently changing rank. Empty or out-of-bounds ranges are rejected. Large selections must be reduced to stay within the element and byte limits; the tool does not quietly export only the first part of an oversized request.
Keep the report with the extracted slice
Download the slice report alongside CSV, JSON or NPY. It records source datatype and byte order, ranges, output shape, filters and selected attributes. This context is necessary when a value needs to be traced back to its location in the original file. The hierarchy manifest provides a broader inventory of the file.
Open a representative output in an independent reader and compare a few known coordinates. A successful binary conversion does not validate the scientific interpretation of a measurement. Keep the original HDF5 file and its accompanying experimental documentation, especially when attributes or dimension-scale references could not be embedded in the destination format.
